Kid’s room photos in MLS. Think twice about kids’ safety

March 29, 2015

Kids roomNow before I start, I know that some people are going to suggest that my statements are a bit ‘overdone’, that I am playing it too safe. However, I do believe that it is important to do as much as I can for kid’s safety. I believe that as a real estate agent, I should make you aware of the facts in relates to your child’s safety.

One of the ways that I consider your child’s safety is when it comes to taking pictures for listing your home on the MLS. When taking picture of the kid’s room to be specific. I am not talking about the fact that your son has to change around his layout or that your daughter should change her color scheme. If it is truly going to detract potential buyers, I might mention this, but I am talking about something else entirely.

I am talking about the safety issues with listing a home that has children. It has become commonplace to have a room where you spell out your child’s name in decorated letters on the wall. This is certainly artistic and cute, I am not arguing against that fact. However, it does open up your child to people who might do harm.

People are able to search the MLS, are able to attend your open house, come into your home for a showing, etc. It is far easier to convince a child that an adult has his/her best intentions at heart if they have learned their name from the letters on the wall. This makes calling out their names and seeking contact far easier.

If you are going to have your child’s room on a picture for a listing, I highly recommend taking the name down from the wall. So far, I have yet to have someone deny this request, especially if I tell the buyer that his or her child’s safety is the reason I am considering this. I feel that it is my duty as a real estate broker to consider these things that you might not automatically think about.
