Wild animals and your backyard in Thornhill Vaughan

March 29, 2015

wild animals in backyardI have had many clients who would like to have a nice green area that extends into a conservation area, golf course, ravine, or forest. Even though this type of opening is certainly beautiful, having that type of open backyard means that you have to be careful when dealing with wild animals.

Especially first-time buyers who have no experience in dealing with this situation, it is important to have a bit more of an understanding of the situation before you choose such a home. Remember that these wild animals may be under your deck, near your roof, or anywhere else around your home. They might just be ‘visiting temporarily’, meaning you may not even see them. You would not believe how busy it might be in your backyard at night. This is especially true if you are surrounded by mature trees, green areas, or parks.

There are plenty of animals in the greater Toronto area, and not all of them are friendly. Sometimes you might have visitors such as raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, and chipmunks. However, you can decrease the likelihood of visitors and future problems by adhering to the following rules:

• Do not feed wild animals in your backyard – yes, not even if you think they are cute
• Do not leave food outside
• If you go to sleep, make sure to lock your doors. The paws of a raccoon are not unlike our own hands, meaning that they could open slide doors with relative ease
• Do not leave your garbage outside because the garbage could attract animals
• If you have a garden, make sure to use pesticides. This will prevent animals from digging up your plants
• Check your roof at least twice each year. Raccoons, squirrels, and birds nest there. This could lead to damages that might be difficult and expensive to repair

To keep in mind
Whatever you do, please make sure that you do not harm the animals. You should not try to get rid of them yourself. You can use sprays to keep them at bay, but do not use poison or otherwise harm them. If you do want get rid of the animals without hurting them, make sure to call a professional.
